A town with a military past
Columbia’s West Seventh Street area was home to the Columbia Arsenal, built by the U.S. Army around 1890, and then to Columbia Military Academy, which trained cadets there from 1905 until 1979. Plenty of Columbia families still have that service connection. Don Hane served two tours in the U.S. Navy, including Desert Storm, and he has been roofing Middle Tennessee since 2009. He runs Roof Troops on the same basics the academy taught: be on time, tell the truth, finish the job.
Old roofs in the West End, new ones on the edges
The West End around West Seventh Street has homes from the 1800s through the early 1930s, many with steep roofs, old board decking and chimneys that have been patched more than once. Near downtown, Columbia’s historic districts add design rules, and a roofing change there needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Zoning Commission before the city issues a permit. We help you assemble the product specs and photos for that application.
Out toward Hampshire Pike, Bear Creek Pike and Highway 31 north, the homes are newer and the problems are different: flashing and ventilation more than worn shingles. On older homes we check decking, rafters and chimney flashing before we price the job, and any decking we replace is done by written change order with photos you approve first.
Tornadoes and ice in Maury County
On May 8, 2024, an EF-3 tornado touched down along the Duck River east of Columbia and tore large sections of roof off homes along Cothran Road, Cranford Hollow Road and Blackburn Lane. In January 2026, a trained spotter in Columbia reported half an inch of freezing rain. After a storm we photograph the roof and give you a written report you can send with a claim, and the claim stays between you and your insurer. See our Columbia roofing page, storm damage repair and emergency roofing.
Veterans: join the crew
Don is currently the only veteran at Roof Troops, and we’re actively hiring veterans for crew and field roles. If you live in Maury County and served, call 615-258-9977.
Other veteran-owned pages: Spring Hill, Thompson’s Station and Shelbyville. More about Don.
