What kind of roofs do Shelbyville homes have?
Shelbyville, the Bedford County seat, has some of the oldest housing in our service area alongside a growing number of new subdivisions. Near the square, the East Shelbyville and West Shelbyville historic areas have homes dating from the 1800s into the 1940s, including along Bland and Magnolia avenues. The city also has local historic districts on Belmont Street, Frierson Eakin, and South Brittain, each with its own design guidelines.
Outside the core, you’ll see mid-century brick ranches and newer subdivisions along the US-231 and Madison Street corridors. Out in the county, there are farmhouses and metal-roofed barns and shops on acreage, which suit metal roofing.
On an older Shelbyville home, we check the decking, chimney, and number of shingle layers before we quote. On a newer home, most early problems come from flashing, pipe boots, and ventilation. For outbuildings, we’ll price metal and shingles so you can compare.

We were extremely pleased from the start with Don and team from Roof Troops Roofing. Communication is very important to us, and he replied to our initial online inquiry the same day, came to evaluate our gutter damage from an ice storm the next day and work was completed within a week. Team was on time and courteous of our property, and price couldn't be beat. We will happily use them in the future.Posted on Google![]()

The guys at Roof Troops were amazing from start to finish. I was impressed with their proposal and the information that they taught me during our initial meeting. We wanted upgraded shingles with a specific design, and they were able to accommodate our needs. They really took care of our landscaping and architecture, which we really appreciate. We will be informing our neighbors about all of our fantastic experiences with Roof Troops Roofing

What storms have hit Shelbyville roofs?
Hail is a real risk here. On May 8, 2024, the National Weather Service received reports of golf-ball-size hail, and one hailstone measuring 2 inches, along Midland Road near the Shelbyville airport. Hail that size can crack shingles and dent gutters, vents, and metal roofs. On April 5, 2017, an unusual EF-1 tornado touched down about 5 miles southwest of Shelbyville, with winds near 95 mph and a path just over 7 miles long. It damaged trees and barns and tore up some home roofs before lifting.
Bedford County also gets the straight-line wind that comes with spring and fall storm lines. If you can’t remember the last time someone was on your roof after a hailstorm, it’s worth a look. We can fly a drone over the roof, photograph any damage, and give you a written estimate. If you file an insurance claim, you can submit those with it. See storm damage repair.

Do you need a permit to replace a roof in Shelbyville?
Inside city limits, permits go through the City of Shelbyville’s Building and Codes Department (100 N. Cannon Blvd., 931-488-4230), which takes many requests through its OpenGov portal. If your home is in one of Shelbyville’s local historic districts, check the city’s historic district design guidelines before you change roofing materials or colors. We’ll confirm the permit and design requirements for your address, pull the permit, and schedule the inspections before work starts. Homes outside city limits go through Bedford County.

Shelbyville roofing questions
Do you put metal roofs on barns and shops?
Do you serve Chapel Hill, Unionville, and Wartrace?
Yes. We cover all of Bedford County and the towns around Shelbyville, and inspections are free.
My roof went through the May 2024 hail. How do I know if it was damaged?
From the ground, you usually can’t. Look for dents in gutters, downspouts, and vent caps. Those are signs the shingles took hits too. A free inspection will confirm it either way.
