What kind of roofs do Tullahoma homes have?
Tullahoma’s homes were mostly built in two waves. The first was the railroad era. The North Atlantic Street Historic District has homes from about 1883 to 1920, many of them late-Victorian, with steep, cut-up roofs and older framing. The second wave came after the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) opened at Arnold Air Force Base in 1951. That set off a postwar building boom of ranches and split-levels, and those homes still make up much of the city.
Many of those mid-century homes have shallow roof pitches, older plywood or board decking, and attics that were never vented to today’s standards. That decking matters more than most people think. This fall, up the road in Manchester, we tore the shingles off an older home and found the original thin plywood had delaminated. We replaced the deck before a single new shingle went on, because a new roof is only as good as what it’s nailed to. What storms have hit Tullahoma roofs?
On November 29, 2016, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Tullahoma, with winds up to 105 mph and an 8-mile path. It crossed North Jackson Street and damaged the roofs of several businesses. Then it moved through the Lakewood Golf and Country Club and Lake Tullahoma Estates neighborhoods, where several hundred trees were snapped or uprooted. Almost all of the home damage there came from falling trees. A second EF-1 touched down near Manchester minutes later.
Tullahoma sits up on the Highland Rim, and spring thunderstorms with hail and straight-line wind come through Coffee County most years. On May 8, 2024, 2-inch hail fell in Manchester, just up the road. That’s big enough to crack shingles and dent gutters and metal.
