Rutherford County is home base for Roof Troops. Our mailing address is on Sharondale Dr in Murfreesboro, and our crews work every part of the county, from the subdivisions off Blackman Rd and Veterans Pkwy to the farm roads around Christiana, Rockvale and Lascassas. If your roof took a hit or is just getting old, we’ll come out for a free inspection and tell you straight whether it needs a repair, a replacement or nothing at all.
Do you need a permit to replace a roof in Rutherford County?
It depends on where you live and what’s under the shingles. In unincorporated Rutherford County, the county Building Codes Department says a permit is not required for a re-roof as long as the job doesn’t involve replacing or repairing roof sheathing, rafters or support beams. If we find rotted decking and have to replace it, a permit is needed. The county also limits asphalt roofs to two layers, so a third layer over old shingles isn’t allowed.
Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne and Eagleville run their own permit offices, so inside city limits we check that city’s rules. The county adopted the 2024 International Codes on May 14, 2026. The county office is at One Public Square, Room 101, in Murfreesboro (615-898-7734).
What storms have hit Rutherford County roofs?
The storm most people here remember is the Good Friday tornado on April 10, 2009. The National Weather Service rated it EF-4, with winds near 170 mph along a 23.25-mile path that started just north of Eagleville and ran through the north side of Murfreesboro. Homes on Highland Park Drive and in the Tomahawk Trace area were destroyed, and the NWS counted 194 homes destroyed and 1,547 damaged or affected across the county.
Smaller storms do more total roof damage over the years. On March 25, 2021, an EF-1 tornado touched down between La Vergne and Smyrna and damaged dozens of roofs. During the January 2026 ice storm, a spotter measured half an inch of ice at Eagleville, enough to bring down limbs and push water under the bottom row of shingles.
What are homes like in Rutherford County?
Rutherford County’s homes are young. Census estimates put the median year built at 2001, and about half of all homes went up after 2000. That matters for roofs: a lot of builder-grade shingles from the 2000s building boom are reaching the age where granules wash into the gutters and tabs start to lift. Roughly two out of three homes are single-family houses, and about two out of three are owner-occupied.
