Tornado and tree damage in Tullahoma

On November 29, 2016, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Tullahoma, with winds up to 105 mph and an 8-mile path. It crossed North Jackson Street, damaging the roofs of several businesses, then moved through the Lakewood Golf and Country Club and Lake Tullahoma Estates neighborhoods, where several hundred trees were snapped or uprooted. Almost all the home damage there came from falling trees. A second EF-1 touched down near Manchester minutes later.

Severe thunderstorms with hail and straight-line wind come through Coffee County most springs. On May 8, 2024, 2-inch hail fell in Manchester, just up the road. Tullahoma mostly got rain instead of ice in the January 2026 storm, but the hard freeze afterward is tough on roofs that are already holding water at the eaves.

Tree damage is the big Tullahoma storm problem. A falling trunk can crack rafters and decking, and on the low-pitch mid-century ranches common here, even a small puncture leaks fast because water drains slowly off a shallow roof. If a tree or limb hit your house, we tarp it first, then check the framing and decking from the attic before we write the estimate.

Storm damage on low-pitch Tullahoma roofs

Many Tullahoma homes from the postwar boom after Arnold Engineering Development Complex opened in 1951 have shallow roof pitches. A low-pitch roof handles storm damage worse than a steep one. Water drains slowly, so a puncture, a lifted shingle, or a cracked pipe boot lets in more water before it runs off. Wind-driven rain can also push under shingles on a shallow slope more easily.

That’s why we treat even small storm damage on these roofs seriously. On a Tullahoma storm inspection, we check for lifted and creased shingles, then go into the attic to look for wet decking and insulation. On low-slope porch roofs or additions, we check the membrane and flashing.

In the Lakewood and Lake Tullahoma Estates areas, where the November 2016 tornado snapped or uprooted several hundred trees, falling trees are still the main risk. In the North Atlantic Street Historic District, steep Victorian roofs with many valleys are more prone to wind damage at the joints.

What we do after a storm

On Tullahoma’s low-pitch homes, we check the attic after every storm inspection, because water can travel far on a shallow deck before it shows.

We’re open 24/7 for emergency tarping. The storm inspection is free and covers every slope plus the gutters, vents, and flashing that show hail size. You get dated photos and a written estimate you can submit with a claim, and if you’d like, we’ll meet your adjuster on the roof. Our own crew does the repair, backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty.

Will insurance pay for storm damage in Tullahoma?

For Tullahoma storm repairs, low-pitch sections may need extra underlayment or a low-slope repair, and the estimate shows which. Coverage is between you and your insurer, and we won’t promise an outcome; you or your licensed public adjuster handle the claim. We never waive deductibles. Paying out of pocket? A full shingle replacement on an average home usually runs $12,000 to $16,000, and financing is available. See insurance claim assistance.

Tullahoma permits after a storm

Inside Tullahoma city limits, storm repairs that need a permit, usually decking or framing work after a tree strike, go through the Building Codes office in the Tullahoma Annex Building (321 N. Collins St., 931-455-2282). Processing takes about 3 to 5 business days, so we tarp and protect the house while it’s pending. Outside city limits, Coffee County applies, which matters near Estill Springs and Tims Ford Lake.

If a tree is involved, the order matters. The tree service removes the tree, we tarp, then we inspect the framing and decking from inside the attic before writing the estimate. If you file a claim, your insurer gets our photos and itemized estimate. You handle the claim, and we never waive deductibles.
