Smyrna knows what service looks like

Smyrna has a long military history. The airport on the east side of town was an Army airfield in World War II and then Sewart Air Force Base, home to troop carrier wings until the base closed around 1970. The Tennessee Army National Guard still flies out of that field today. Plenty of Smyrna families have someone who served, and what they usually want from a roofer is simple: show up when promised and tell the truth about the roof.

That is how Don runs Roof Troops. He served two tours in the U.S. Navy, including Desert Storm, and he has been roofing Middle Tennessee since 2009. He still answers for every job his crews do.

What we usually find on Smyrna roofs

Smyrna grew fast after the Nissan plant opened in 1983, and a lot of the homes from that first wave along Sam Ridley Parkway and Rock Springs Road were built with three-tab shingles. Many are on their second roof now, or due for one. Newer subdivisions like Stewart Creek Farms, Greystone and Clear Creek are still on builder roofs, where the problems are more often bath fans venting into the attic, short drip edge and gutters that can’t keep up.

So we start in the attic as often as on the roof. If a repair will do, we say so. If the decking is soft once the old shingles come off, you see photos and approve a written change order before we replace any of it.

Storms, permits and paperwork

On March 25, 2021, an EF-1 tornado touched down between La Vergne and Smyrna and tracked through neighborhoods off Rock Springs Road, leaving roof damage on dozens of homes. Straight-line wind and hail come through Rutherford County most springs. After a storm we photograph the roof and give you a written report you can send with a claim. The claim itself is between you and your insurance company.

Inside town limits, a straight shingle replacement usually doesn’t need a permit from Smyrna Building Safety. If we find decking or framing that has to be replaced, it does, and we tell you before we pull it. Is Roof Troops veteran-owned?

Yes. Roof Troops Roofing is veteran-owned. Owner Don Hane is a U.S. Navy Combat Veteran who served two tours, including Desert Storm.

How long does it take you to get to Smyrna?

About 20 minutes from our base on Sharondale Dr in Murfreesboro. We're open 24 hours, every day, and we answer within the hour.

My Smyrna house still has three-tab shingles. Do I need a new roof?

Not always. Age alone doesn't decide it. We check the shingles, the flashing and the attic, then tell you whether a repair buys you real time or whether replacement makes more sense.

Do you offer a military discount?

Yes. We offer a discount for veterans, active military, first responders, and teachers. Mention it when you call and we'll apply it to your estimate.

Do I need a permit to re-roof in Smyrna?

Usually not for a straight shingle replacement inside town limits. If decking or framing has to be replaced, the job needs a permit from Smyrna Building Safety, and we let you know before we pull it.
