Roof Color Guide for Brick and Siding Homes

The quick rule: match the roof to the part of your house you can't change. Brick and stone stay forever, so pick a shingle color that works with them, then choose siding, trim and shutters around both. When in doubt, a weathered wood blend or a medium to dark gray works with almost anything and is easy to get through an HOA.

Below are pairings we use on homes across Rutherford, Williamson, Wilson and Davidson counties, plus how to get an HOA approval done without delaying your roof.

Color pairings that work

Color names below are from two widely available lines, GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration. CertainTeed, Malarkey and TAMKO offer similar shades under their own names. Availability varies by region, so we confirm what's stocked in Middle Tennessee before you decide.

Screens and printed photos never show shingle color accurately. Always look at a real sample or a finished roof in daylight before you choose.

How to pick with confidence

  1. Drive your street. See what neighbors chose, and look at roofs in the same color in morning and late afternoon light.
  2. Hold a real sample against your brick or siding. We bring samples to your free inspection.
  3. Use the maker's visualizer. GAF and Owens Corning both have online tools that let you try colors on a photo of your house.
  4. Think about the next 25 years. Trendy colors date fast. Neutral roofs help resale.
  5. Consider the gutters and trim. White, black and bronze gutters each change the look. If you're replacing gutters too, pick them together.

Getting HOA approval without delays

Many newer subdivisions in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne, Spring Hill, Mt. Juliet and Franklin have an architectural review committee (ARC). Most meet on a set schedule, so a late request can push your install back weeks.

  1. Read your covenants or call your management company. Some HOAs keep an approved color list, and some require a specific shingle style like architectural shingles.
  2. Get your color sheet from us. Manufacturer, product line, exact color name, and a photo of the swatch.
  3. Submit early. Turn the request in as soon as you've picked a color, even before insurance is settled.
  4. Get the approval in writing and keep it with your roof paperwork.
  5. We order after approval. We don't order materials for an HOA home until you have that approval in hand.

Questions homeowners ask

Does my HOA have to approve my new roof color?

Most subdivision HOAs in Middle Tennessee require written approval for an exterior change, and many treat a new roof color as one, even if you're replacing it with the same color. Check your covenants or ask your management company before materials are ordered.

What do I submit to my HOA for a roof?

Usually the manufacturer, the shingle line, the exact color name, and a photo or sample. We give you a color sheet with all of that so you can attach it to your request.

What's the most popular roof color in Middle Tennessee?

Grays and weathered wood blends are the most common choices we see on newer homes around Murfreesboro and La Vergne, with black growing fast on white brick and farmhouse style homes.

Do darker shingles make my house hotter?

A little in the attic, since dark shingles absorb more sun. Good attic ventilation matters far more than color for comfort and shingle life. We check ventilation on every replacement.
